Dick Roman went poof and that took Cas and Dean with him. Zapped straight into Purgatory with the door swinging shut behind them. It took all of five seconds for Castiel to realize that he was a beacon. He was leading them straight to Dean. He had done the man so much harm already he couldn't handle bringing down more Leviathan's on him. This place was full of abominations, but Dean could handle those. He had watched Dean cut through multiple demons in his lifetime. He would be safe if Castiel left and so he did.
Dean didn't even get to say goodbye, but it was for the best. Castiel needed to put distance between them. He had messed up so bad with Dean Winchester and here he was doing it once again. The man was trapped in Purgatory and there wasn't anything Castiel could do about it. It pained him not to be able to zap him out of here and reunite him with Sam. If he could he'd gladly take his place a million times over if Dean got his exit. That wasn't how Purgatory worked though and he had to play by it's rules. That meant fighting to stay alive. His powers were still functional down here and that just meant he had to stay one step ahead of them at all times. It was important.
The beard that grew in place on his face was wild. A beard was illogical in the past. It was not Jimmy's face. Jimmy was his vessel, but he figured it only right to abide by Jimmy's dress code. He had cracked a little when he took Lucifer away from Sam, but Purgatory cleared things up for him.
When word got around to him that Dean was hunting him down to reunite it scared him. Castiel had found a place where he could finally atone for all the wrongs he had engaged in. He had killed so many of his own people and he wasn't sure he could stomach that out there. In here he was finally being punished. He was finally being called out on what had happened up there. He took so many lives and he never looked back. It was time he paid for that now. Purgatory would make him pay. Maybe Purgatory would wash him clean with all it's dirty and grime.
